The French Defence A Complete Black Repertoire Nikita Vitiugov 9789548782760 Books
It is a rare event when a 2700+ GM writes a book on an opening that he plays extensively, but that is what we have in this book. He gives, as the subtitle explains, a complete Black repertoire against 1.e4, including odd and rare White early moves, the KIA, and the main lines. He gives Black THREE separate repertoires after 1.e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2, including the Rubinstein Var. w/ 3...de4, the Morozevich Var. w/ 3.Be7 and the Tarrasch 3...c5 var. Quite a feast to choose from! Of course, the Advance Var is covered. He meets this w/ 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4.c3 Qb6. And the Winawer is covered as well. A concern I have here, though, is that he covers his Winawer repertoire in only about 42 pages. He gives 2 repertoires again here after the normal 4.e5, briefly giving some theory after 4...b6 but focusing mainly on 4...c5. I think that this is plenty of material for the average to strong club player to try to assimilate, but higher rated players will certainly need to supplement the coverage here. The format of the book is a little unusual, in that it is almost a blend of annotated games and a branching tree of variations. Full games are not actually given, with alternate moves given along the way, and occasionally branching variations are given. The outstanding feature of the book for me, a lower rated player, is the copious explanatory notes given in every single line. Nikita has poured a lot of effort into this work. Sometimes opening books from this publisher can be hastily put together 'data dumps' with little or no helpful commentary. But this book is bursting with helpful explanatory notes that will make it useful even to average tournament players, and even masters will benefit from the notes from such a strong GM. This is a warmly recommended volume for French players. Many might even find that this fits the bill for their primary French reference, although Watson and others will have their advocates as well.Product details

The French Defence A Complete Black Repertoire Nikita Vitiugov 9789548782760 Books Reviews
The author, a 2700 rated GM, might be the highest rated player to ever write a book on the French Def. It's a complete repertoire, by a world class player who plays the opening, and a must for anyone who plays the French.
